Kilim Shahsaven - Persia. Circa 1930. 165 X 90 Cm
Authentic, unique, and almost perplexing, this piece is extremely rare in its composition.
Created by the Shahsavan nomadic people of Persia, it was woven using the traditional “wool-on-wool” technique on a rudimentary horizontal loom, such as those used in nomadic life.
The piece consists of two long panels woven separately, then joined and sewn together. This construction is integral to its aesthetic and gives it its distinctive structure.
But its true uniqueness lies in its color palette.
Most of the surface is left in the natural color of the material: undyed, natural wool with soft, subtly nuanced tones. This understated simplicity is suddenly punctuated by narrow bands in plant-based dyes of remarkable depth and luminosity.
The contrast is striking. The indigo blues, in particular, are marvelous: deep and vibrant against the natural wool. A few warmer accents punctuate the whole and add rhythm to the composition without ever disrupting its balance.
The weave is precise and even. The hand-spun wool retains all its character and texture.
This piece exudes a very contemporary feel, even though every aspect of its design belongs to an ancient nomadic tradition. A highly decorative piece, but above all deeply authentic and exceptionally rare.
