Set Of 2 Maffrash Panels. Caucasus. Circa 1900. 104 X 90 Cm

A stunning set consisting of two large panels of antique Caucasian mafrash, joined and sewn together.

The composition is organized into two broad sections dominated by powerful diamond-shaped medallions, set against a madder-red background punctuated by broken indigo and turquoise lines.

The central medallions, rendered in natural ivory and very dark brown, contain small lozenges and are surrounded by highly stylized floral, cruciform, and zoomorphic forms. The various bands are enlivened by a succession of polychrome motifs that may evoke birds seen in profile. In the Caucasian decorative tradition, however, these forms are more likely to be associated with stylized dragon motifs, traditionally linked to protection, power, and fertility.

The color palette is superb: madder red, indigo blue, turquoise, deep brown, natural ivory, saffron yellow, and orange. The dyes, derived exclusively from plants, have retained a remarkable purity. The indigo blues are particularly striking—almost liquid, oceanic.

The entire piece is woven wool-on-wool with great finesse, demonstrating remarkable craftsmanship.
