Kilim Parmaklı - Afyon, Anatolia. Circa 1960. 104 X 96 Cm
The Pattern as a Form of Visual Writing
This piece belongs to the parmaklı kilim family, which originates from the Afyon region in southwestern Anatolia. In Turkish, parmaklı means “finger”: the name fits well with these elongated shapes that seem to grow out from either side of the center.
Everything is organized into horizontal bands. The shapes echo one another without ever repeating exactly: some stretch almost to the edges, while others converge toward the center. Their tips lend energy to the composition. The axis and symmetry are clearly present, but the subtle variations prevent the whole from feeling rigid.
The colors also play an essential role. Coral red and deep red stand out against the ivory and light beige; mauve and violet add depth. Each color sets the stage for the next shape: geometry structures the piece, while color gives it movement.
The parmaklı pattern evokes family, the bonds of mutual support among its members, and, beyond that, the solidarity of an entire community. Here, the shapes face each other, draw closer, and move away together. Each retains its place while contributing to a single whole: a very concrete image of these bonds.
