This piece is a tchouval from Maraş, located in southern Anatolia. The tchouval is a large carrying bag used by nomadic peoples to store and transport grain. It can therefore be classified among the broad category of everyday objects—designed primarily for practical use, yet revealing remarkable craftsmanship in this piece.

The weaving is meticulous, extremely precise, and even. You notice it immediately, but it’s only when you touch it that you truly appreciate its quality. The piece is both light and supple, and the wool, of very high quality, is extremely soft. This is a rather rare sensation for an object of this nature.

And then there is the radiance of the colors, with an obvious harmony. On the embroidered section, the white shapes, made of cotton, highlight the patterns and create vivid contrasts. The indigo blues complement the oranges—ranging from the brightest to the most coppery—while the saffron yellow and olive green add their own nuances. Everything is luminous, and each hue seems to find its natural place, with perfectly mastered precision.
