Karabakh Rug. Caucasus. Early 20th Century. 275 X 150 Cm

A superb Caucasian rug from Karabakh, Armenia, woven and knotted using the traditional wool-on-wool technique.
Antique rugs from Karabakh hold a special place within the broader family of Caucasian rugs. This region, situated at the crossroads of various cultural and artistic influences, has produced carpets that are often recognizable by the freedom of their designs, the power of their compositions, and above all, a particularly expressive use of color. The finest pieces possess the rather rare ability to combine a highly organized structure with a certain spontaneity in the details.
Our rug is a beautiful example of this.

The composition revolves around three imposing geometric medallions arranged along the central axis, yet each possesses its own distinct character. The deep blues of the upper and lower medallions frame the central one, which is dominated by red, thus creating a particularly successful contrast. Surrounding them is a remarkable profusion of small floral and geometric motifs, arranged in rows but never in an overly rigid manner.

The numerous borders also contribute to this impression of refinement. A succession of narrow bands, each with different designs and colors, gradually encircles the central field. The predominantly orange border, which is particularly luminous, is, in my opinion, one of the most captivating visual hallmarks of this piece.

The color palette is remarkable: madder red and coral, saffron orange, indigo blue and midnight blue, ivory, brown, with a few softer shades...
The variations observed in certain areas should obviously not be considered flaws; on the contrary, they contribute to the depth and the unique vibrancy of traditional dyes.
The pile is rather short, with a beautiful silky sheen. The wool reflects light beautifully and gives the colors a wonderful depth.
This is precisely what I love about the old Karabakh rugs: behind the apparent rigor of the construction, there is always a sense of freedom. Nothing is truly mechanical. The design, the subtle variations in hue, and the slight irregularities still tell the story of the weaver’s work.
A rug that is both highly decorative and representative of this ancient Caucasian tradition, which is now particularly sought after for its character, its rich color palette, and the uniqueness of its decorative style.
