British Model 1796 Officer's Saber For The Light Cavalry
English light cavalry officer’s saber, Model 1796. Neoclassical handle made of stingray leather, trimmed with silver thread and fitted with a hoop guard adorned with an officer’s pommel. The single-groove blade features superb bluing and gilding, with the post-1801 coat of arms on one side and the royal monogram “GR” on the other, along with other floral motifs. The rear of the blade’s hilt bears the manufacturer’s mark “J.J. Runkel Solingen.” It comes with its steel scabbard, which bears a worn manufacturer’s cartouche, likely that of Johnston of Strand, London. A very fine example in superb condition.
