17th Century - Tuscany / Umbria - Travel Writing Desk With Ebony Veneer
An extraordinary monastic-style travel writing desk, crafted from beech wood veneered with ebony and lined on the inside with decorated “peigné ondulé” paper.
Even the guilloché frame surrounding the edges of the piece is made of ebony!
Tuscany/Umbria – 17th century.
The writing desk, which is in excellent condition, is distinguished by the presence of the original paper and its three compartments, one of which is a hidden side compartment that, when slid to the right, reveals a space for ink (with an original perforated tin container), for ink, and for pens.
The low front drawer is designed for bulkier accessories, while the upper one is for sheets of paper.
The upper drawer opens by pressing a small pin, which releases the lock from the lid’s latch.
This and the rest of the hardware are original.
An extremely rare and valuable piece, beautifully preserved and in its original condition.
