Early 16th Century - Germany - Polychrome Wooden Bust Of God The Father
A sculpted bust depicting God The Father, of German origin and dating from the first half of the 16th century.
The sculpture, characterized by hard, bold lines, depicts God the Judge with physical features that are at times almost caricatured, such as the facial expression, the beard, and the hair.
The left hand, with the index finger pointing downward as if to bring man (who is below him) to judgment, is a defining feature of the work.
Overall, the work stands as an extremely rare, fascinating, and intriguing sacred depiction.
The quality of the craftsmanship, however, is unquestionable.
The condition is good: the paint has only been stabilized, and woodworm holes were treated before they could cause damage to the wood. The halo is missing.
