Late Meiji Period (circa 1890) - Sake Bowl - Kutani - Dancing Geisha On A Dragon
A beautiful small porcelain sake bowl painted in iron red and gold, from the Kutani workshop, circa 1890.
On the inside, the bowl features the figure of a dancing geisha holding a gold-painted fan. Dressed in intricately rendered traditional attire, the figure seems to merge with the dragon, whose gentle muzzle lies at her feet.
The two figures, whose bodies blend together in their intertwining, are set in an idealized space where the soft, undulating gold simulates clouds stirred by the wind, amidst which the two figures dance.
The upper edge is outlined in gold; the exterior is decorated with splendid, rich floral and geometric motifs, all in iron red and gold.
The carved ring-shaped foot is decorated with abstract motifs. What appears to be a break is in fact a technical device to prevent the suction effect caused by water trapped by the solid circular foot on the tray.
Therefore, in perfect condition, with normal signs of use.
