Ginori Doccia - 1750/60 - “galli Rossi” Cup And Saucer And “bird On A Rock” In Bastar Stoneware
A splendid cup-and-saucer set with a cup shaped like a small barrel. Manufactured by Ginori di Doccia, early period, the 1750s.
This extraordinary set is among the earliest and rarest versions of Ginori’s “Galli Rossi” decoration.
First and foremost, the cup’s bowl-shaped form, combined with the still-Baroque handle, identifies it as a valuable piece from the early period.
The material, which can be observed against the light with its greenish-gray translucency, is the so-called “masso bastardo,” a unique blend of local clays that was in use from the early period until around 1780.
The decoration in iron red and gold, with rich and deep tones and texture, depicts two red roosters in a defiant pose, surrounded by a stylized exotic landscape of Eastern origin. The clarity and quality of the decoration are complemented by the inclusion of a unique variant—a bird perched on the branches of a tree—a distinctive mark of the artist created for a specific patron.
This detail, combined with the quality of the workmanship and the presence of a capital “L” on the bottom (not a maker’s mark, but a sort of early production tracking code), indicates that this is not a classic mass-produced example, but rather an object that was certainly very fashionable yet designed with variations for a specific, high-ranking client, who could boast not only of the object’s value but also of its uniqueness.
As is typical for early Doccia productions, there is no mark present.
The condition is perfect, with no chips or damage of any kind.
The typical (classic) firing marks and bubbles are an indicator of authenticity and the quality of the craftsmanship.
