Early 16th Century - Tuscany - Polychrome Carved Wooden Corpus Christi
An exceptional wooden Corpus Christi from the early 16th century.
The details of the arms, feet, and face, as well as the torso, place this piece in the mid-15th century.
Considering the perizonium as well, the crucifix is believed to belong to the transitional period between the Gothic and Renaissance styles, thus dating to the very early 16th century.
The expressiveness of Christ’s face, in its serene surrender to suffering, is extraordinary.
The paint still bears traces of blood-red pigment around the side and feet.
The arms (original and complete) have been reattached at the shoulders, but there are no missing parts, thus ensuring complete continuity and integrity of form and not affecting the condition of the work.
The only missing parts are found in some of the fingers.
