Medieval Bronze Seal Matrix - 14th Century - Provenance Adrien Prévost De Longpérier
Rare bronze seal matrix of navette form, datable to the 14th century.
In the center of the matrix appears a fleur-de-lys surmounting a motif difficult to interpret, possibly a bishop's miter or an open book, suggesting an ecclesiastical or institutional context. The peripheral legend, partially legible, remains to be deciphered, with a gap visible in its lower part.
The reverse still displays its gripping edge as well as its suspension ring, attesting to its structural integrity despite the centuries.
The object is distinguished by a remarkable provenance: it comes from the personal collection of Adrien Prévost de Longpérier (1816-1882), eminent archaeologist, numismatist and curator of antiquities at the Musée du Louvre between 1847 and 1870, a major figure in 19th-century archaeological scholarship, close to imperial circles and an advisor on antiquities acquisition.
Beautiful homogeneous dark green patina, testifying to long age and a stable conservation environment. Good overall condition, despite a small lack affecting the lower part of the legend.
Piece of collection.
Historical and scientific collector's item, particularly interesting for lovers of medieval sigillography and prestigious provenances.
