Kabutowari Helmet Buster From The Edo Period, Displayed On Its Stand

A magnificent kabutowari, helmet breaker, or skull-crusher, this iron weapon is adorned with beautiful globular nodules along its entire blade. Small but heavy, this blunt iron weapon was used to smash helmets, tear armor, and strike bare skin. It was used by samurai and ashigaru during the early and middle Edo period (1603-1868) in Japan. This example features a finely braided cane handle.
