Tibet. Antique Tibetan Short Sword With Dragon-decorated Scabbard. 19th Century

Antique Tibetan short sword dating from the late 19th century, immediately remarkable for the richness of its decorative work and the strong visual impact of the ensemble. This is a piece clearly conceived both for use and for representation. The hilt is made of engraved iron with highly stylised vegetal decoration, also featuring a central motif reminiscent of a vase or ritual element. The grip is covered with braided steel wire, well preserved, which adds texture and character to the whole.

The scabbard retains its original structure, with a wooden core and an exterior iron covering worked through chiselling and piercing. The decoration is particularly rich and complex, extending along its entire length with a stylised dragon accompanied by various animals, among which an owl, a rabbit and a dog can clearly be distinguished. The reverse side presents an ornamental composition reminiscent of a symbolic sky, with forms evoking clouds or celestial motifs, creating an interesting visual contrast.

The steel blade also features refined engraved decoration. On one side, a stylised dragon runs longitudinally along the surface, while on the other geometric motifs are combined with ornamental elements of symbolic inspiration. The surface shows wear and light oxidation consistent with its age, without affecting the aesthetic appreciation or structural integrity of the weapon.

Due to the quality and richness of its decorative work, this sword stands out clearly within the field of Asian arms collecting. Its symbolic iconography and stylistic coherence make it a highly attractive piece for specialised collections. It is also an object of strong aesthetic presence, capable of becoming one of the most striking elements within an Oriental art collection.

A Tibetan sword of extraordinary presence, ideal for those seeking an authentic piece with character and strong visual impact.
