Chimila Anthropomorphic Funeral Urn
Provenance: Colombia
Era: A.D. 800-1400
Dimensions: 20.3 cm (H) x 17.1 cm (Ø)
A magnificent anthropomorphic funerary urn from the Chimila culture of Colombia, dating from around A.D. 800-1400. These urns were destined for the burial chambers of well tombs in northwestern Colombia, designed to contain skeletal remains deposited during post-cremation rituals. They are said to represent phallic forms, and the idea of placing bones in them, in well tombs evoking a womb, fueled the conception of bones as the seeds of life. This remarkably well-preserved urn features a bulbous body with hands encircling the body, while ritual clothing descends to its center. The face, integrated into the urn's lid, has fine features, small slit eyes and mouth, a nicely prominent nose and ceremonial headdress.
