Neolithic Basalt Beak Faced Head
Provenance: Turkey or Syria
Era: 4000-3000 BC
Dimensions: 20 cm (H) x 12.5 cm (W) x 10 cm (D)
A striking and fascinating example of a Neolithic altar object depicting a figure with a beak-shaped face, carved in basalt, dating from around 4000-3000 BC, from the region corresponding to present-day Turkey or Syria. This remarkably textured basalt is incredibly expressive, with sculpted eyes, a broken nose at the base and a crown carved in the round. Its most striking feature is undoubtedly its elongated, beak-like face. It was probably used to support a stone ritual altar. This strikingly beautiful and evocative sculpture bears witness to the rituals of the Neolithic world. Presented on a contemporary acrylic base.
Provenance: from an impressive collection of Canadian antiquities, acquired in the early 2000s from a New York gallery.
