Large Sandstone Sculpture Of Nagaraja On Stand
Magnificent 14th-15th century sandstone sculpture depicting Nagaraja, king of the Nagas, divine half-human half-serpent beings living in Patala, the underworld. Patala is often described as more beautiful in its splendor than Svarga, the celestial kingdom. It is made up of seven realms, the lowest of which, Naga-loka, is home to the Nagas.
Under a canopy of five serpents and surmounted by two praying figures, this monumental sculpture, 68.5 cm high on its plinth, probably an ancient temple ornament, is a remarkable example of large size. It stands on a contemporary black base.
