Exceptional Large 19th-Century Marble Sculpture “Discophoros” — 58 cm
An exceptional 19th-century hand-carved marble figure of the Discophoros (“Disc Bearer”), inspired by the celebrated Classical Greek athlete type attributed to Polykleitos. This finely executed sculpture captures the idealized male form in a graceful contrapposto stance, holding a discus in one hand and resting against a naturalistic marble support.
Carved from high-quality white marble with a soft, luminous surface, the piece displays superb anatomical modeling—the muscular tension, proportions, and subtle detailing of the torso and limbs reflect the influence of ancient Greek bronzes and the high craftsmanship typical of Italian Neoclassical workshops of the mid- to late-19th century.
The sculpture measures an impressive 58 cm in height, offering a commanding presence suitable for interior display in a gallery, library, or private collection. An outstanding example of Grand Tour-era academic sculpture.
