Northern Spanish Romanesque Sandstone Corbel Depicting A Musician
Magnificent stone corbel depicting a musician holding a stringed instrument, probably a cistre, lute or similar instrument, dating from the 12th-century Romanesque period in northern Spain. This fine representation retains great detail in the soundboard and body of the instrument, despite some missing parts in the lower part of the console. Massive stone construction, with traces of gesso still visible on the outside, finely carved and executed. Presented on a period welded metal stand.
Musicians played an essential role in Romanesque Spain, bridging the gap between sacred and secular life. They were to be found both in and out of liturgical contexts, musicians being a key element of the cultural landscape.
