Shepherd, Circle Of Philipp Peter Roos (1655-1706), Oil On Canvas
A magnificent pastoral scene depicting a shepherd tending his flock of sheep in a field, painted in the late 17th century in the circle of the German painter Philipp Peter Roos (1655-1706). Although born in Germany, Roos studied in Amsterdam before settling in Rome in 1677, where he worked actively. Renowned for his Baroque pastoral scenes, he was famous for his superb depictions of oxen, sheep, and goats. Exhibiting intense craquelure and a few small losses, this oil on heavy canvas is stretched over its original solid oak stretcher and contemporaryally framed in a wooden frame. Of exceptional beauty and gentleness, this work could allude to Christ as the Good Shepherd, but it is also possible that it is simply a pastoral scene. In any case, it is a magnificent painting from the Baroque period. 66 cm (W) x 53 cm (H)
