Egyptian Limestone Ibis Body On Base, Middle Kingdom (2040-1782 B.c.).
An imposing and incredibly enigmatic limestone ibis from the Middle Kingdom (2040-1782 B.C.) of ancient Egypt. The ibis, revered as the terrestrial representation of the god Thoth, symbolizes wisdom, writing and magic. Its long, curved beak, reminiscent of a scribe's quill, and the crescent moon adorning it, link it to the intellectual quest. Originally adorned with a bronze head and legs, this statue was probably a large votive offering placed in a tomb or burial site.
Dominating the floor from its plinth and measuring 30 cm in height, this imposing statue is an outstanding example of early Egyptian stone ritual statuary.
Provenance: important New York antiquities collection, from a Toronto museum.
