Black Schist Offering Plate From Ancient Egypt, Predynastic Period Of Naqada Ii
An exceptionally fine and rare example of a black schist offering dish, dating from the Naqada II period of Predynastic Egypt (3500-3200 BC). This exceptionally rare dish was placed in a tomb and contained funerary offerings of food, drink or cosmetics intended to accompany the deceased and support him on his journey to the afterlife. There are traces of carving on the back of the dish, but overall, the surface is of remarkable quality, both on the front and reverse. An old crack repair is present, but is solidly consolidated. To the touch, this is an object of striking beauty.
