Beautiful limestone head depicting a bearded and heavily moustached man with a slightly grimaced smile of Celtic origin circa 2nd century BCE. Beautiful carving within the beard has weathered slightly less than the facial features, giving this piece a beautifully haunting presence, with new details found on each view.
These pre-Romano Celtic stone heads were used as apotropaic talismans, in ritual magic to ward off evil spirits, death and poor fortune.
With provenance to a prominent UK collection, mounted to a contemporary metal stand for display.
