Portrait Of William Dobson (1611–1642), From The Dobson Circle, Oil On Panel

Origin: England
Period: 17th century
Dimensions: 18.5 in. (H) x 13 in. (W)

A superb oil portrait on panel, dating from the mid-17th century, depicting one of the first major English painters: the portrait painter William Dobson (1611–1646). The work was created by an artist associated with Dobson’s circle. It is a portrait of striking expressiveness and mystery, highlighting Dobson’s flowing hair and the mustache that was in vogue at the time. Dobson received commissions from Charles I following the death of Anthony van Dyck; forced to remain at the royal court in Oxford during the English Civil War, he painted numerous prominent “Cavaliers” (supporters of the king). A well-preserved 17th-century painting depicting an eminent artist who died in poverty at the age of only 35. Presented in a custom-made frame.

Provenance: Formerly in the collection of a major Ontario collector; formerly in the collection of a small Ontario museum.
