Tumultuous Skirmish, Circle Of Pieter Snayers (1592 - 1667)
Artist: Pieter Snayers (1592 - 1667)
A magnificent 17th-century Flemish painting, created in the circle of Pieter Snayers (1592-1667), depicting a battle scene of extreme violence. Horsemen kill each other with swords, horses collapse, men are stabbed, all against a splendid landscape. An image of striking dichotomy, where beauty and violence coexist in the same setting. Of imposing size (110.5 cm high by 92 cm wide), this highly expressive work captivates the viewer. It is framed in an antique, multi-tiered giltwood frame, relined and cleaned. Pieter Snayers was renowned for his panoramic depictions of cavalry battles. Famous for these scenes, he was the official military iconographer in Brussels and collaborated on several occasions with Peter Paul Rubens. Originating from the collection of Frantisek Sembdner (Prague), and subsequently from a private collection of Old Master works in Toronto.
