Elegant solid silver goblet finely engraved with stylized floral motifs and an architectural view depicting a church or group of houses, framed with guilloché and geometric borders.
Description
The typically Russian decoration is executed with a burin and dotted line, in the spirit of the Moscow and Saint Petersburg silversmiths of the late 19th century.
Hallmarks identified under the base:
• “84” for the fineness of Russian silver (i.e. 875/1000),
• Head of Saint George slaying the dragon facing right: control hallmark of the city of Moscow,
• Date letter “1895” indicating the year of inspection,
• Initials of the master silversmith “IO C” (И.О.С), attributed to a Moscow workshop active in the 1890s,
• Five-pointed star: secondary control mark used at the end of the 19th century.
This type of small goblet (or stakan) was traditionally used for vodka or kvass, often offered as a commemorative gift.
