Lignum Crucis Reliquary, 19th Century
Lignum Crucis reliquary in an oval setting, late 18th–early 19th century- Italy
Description
Reliquary containing a relic of the Holy Cross (Lignum Crucis), displayed in the center in the form of a wooden cross set against a red silk background. The relic is highlighted by a radiating decoration of gilded paper and surrounded by a frame of finely cut paper scrolls accented with red.
The handwritten inscription “Ex Ligno D.N.J.C” is perfectly legible in the lower section.
The reverse side is sealed with the original backing, secured by silk threads and affixed with a red wax seal bearing a coat of arms, guaranteeing that the reliquary has not been opened since its ecclesiastical authentication. The seal is well-preserved and serves as an important guarantee of authenticity.
