Neo-gothic Reliquary Shrine In Gilt Bronze Containing A Reliquary Tube Ex Ossibus – 19th Century
Neo-Gothic gilt bronze reliquary containing a bone relic tube – 19th century.
Important gilt bronze reliquary in the Neo-Gothic style, with rich architectural decoration composed of trefoil arches, scrolls, small columns, and symbolic Christian medallions (Chi-Rho monogram, Alpha and Omega, doves).
Description:
The front is surmounted by a Latin cross. The interior contains a cylindrical glass reliquary tube resting on a cushion of gilt silk and crimson velvet.
An old handwritten label reads: “Ex oss. BEB des Ages” (Bone relic of the Ages). Bone relic (ex ossibus) attributed to a saint or martyr.
Strong hypothesis: It could be a martyr of the catacombs with a reconstructed or Gallicized name.
Many relics of this type come from the bodies of so-called “catacomb martyrs” sent to France in the 19th century, sometimes with altered names.
The tube is closed with antique textile mounts, held in place by red threads and two original red wax seals preserved intact. The seal is consistent and unaltered.
Dimensions: 32 x 35 x 20.5 cm.
Condition:
Very good overall condition of the gilding and structure. The inner reliquary is complete with the original seal preserved.
In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as a sacred work of art.
The relics it contains are not the object of the transaction, but are included free of charge for their historical and cultural value.
