Reliquary pendant of the True Cross (Ex Ligno Crucis) - 19th - Italy
Description
Oval reliquary pendant in metal (silver-plated or alloy to be determined), opening, containing in its center a relic of the True Cross (Ex Ligno Crucis) formed of fragments arranged in a lattice on a red textile background.
The whole is framed by a delicate gilded paperolle decoration, typical of 18th-19th century devotional production.
The reverse contains an ecclesiastical red wax seal applied to textile, originally attesting to the reliquary's authenticity and closure. The seal, although partially worn, appears to feature a heraldic motif.
Condition:
Usage wear, metal oxidation, antique seal still in place.
