Portrait Of Archpriest Jb Van Roo (1716–1797), 19th-century Belgian School

Portrait of Archpriest JB Van Roo (1716–1797) - Belgian School, 19th century – Oil on panel.

Portrait of a clergyman representing Archpriest JB Van Roo, an 18th-century Flemish religious figure, identified by an inscription painted in gold lettering in the upper left: “J. Bart. Van-Roo – Archpriest – 1716 + 1797”.

Description:

The sitter is depicted in bust form, slightly turned, wearing a fur coat over his ecclesiastical robes, in a restrained and dignified style typical of commemorative religious portraits.
The expressive and direct treatment of the face contrasts with the dark background, emphasizing the subject's personality. The painting, executed in oil on panel, has a uniform patina with a network of fine craquelure consistent with its age.
The old inscription contributes significantly to the historical interest of the work.

According to tradition, JB Van Roo (Jan Barthel, 1716–1797) was an influential clergyman from West Flanders, renowned for his pastoral work, intellectual activity, and leadership of the Abbey of Our Lady of the New Plantation in Ypres for several decades.

The work is presented in a later molded frame.

Dimensions: Artwork: 54.5 × 46 cm - Frame: 69 × 60 cm.

A decorative and documentary historical portrait, a testament to Flemish ecclesiastical memory.

Condition:

The painting is well preserved, exhibiting a network of fine craquelure and a uniform antique patina, with no major visible deterioration. The later frame is in good condition with minor wear consistent with its age.
