A devotional sculpture carved from wood and painted in multiple colors, depicting Christ Mocked, seated with his hands bound in front of him and his head bowed in an attitude of resignation. At his feet, a skull evoking Golgotha reinforces the symbolic dimension of the representation.

Description

Christ is depicted seated on a stylized masonry seat, clad in a perizonium and crowned with thorns. The deliberately expressive rendering of the face and anatomy, along with the direct and vigorous carving, place this work within the tradition of European religious folk art.

Condition

TheThe piece retains its original polychrome paint with small imperfections and visible losses that give the sculpture an authentic patina and a particularly evocative character
The reverse side and base show evidence of early hand carving as well as signs of wear consistent with the object’s age.
