Elegant statuette depicting a bishop or holy prelate holding an open bible, made of silver (tested positive for silver) and carved bone for the head and hands and bible.
Description
The finely modeled face, with soft features, contrasts with the more hieratic treatment of the cope and mitre, finely chiseled with circular and ornamental motifs.
The bishop presents an open book - symbol of the divine word - also carved in bone.
The octagonal base bears on the reverse an engraved dedication: "To Anne-Chantal of Jean & Monique, May 18, 1957"
This mention probably indicates a religious or solemn baptismal gift, in accordance with the tradition of post-war Christian families.
French work of fine quality, in the vein of goldsmiths and religious sculptors of the mid-20th century, inspired by Gothic and medieval models.
Dimensions: 17.5 cm high
Condition:
very good general condition, old patina, slightly oxidized silver, wear from use.
