Octagonal Reliquary With Relics And Saint Francis Borgia, 17th–18th Century
Antique and evocative octagonal devotional reliquary, attributable to the late 17th–early 18th century, set within an ebonized wooden frame.
The frame, characterized by its sober dark finish and molded relief decoration, fully belongs to the Baroque and late-Baroque production intended for the display of devotional objects in both domestic and ecclesiastical contexts.
At the center stands a finely engraved burin portrait depicting Saint Francis Borgia, a prominent figure of the Society of Jesus, following an iconographic model widely diffused in the 18th century for small reliquaries and devotional medallions.
Surrounding the medallion are eight oval compartments symmetrically arranged, containing relics with their handwritten labels, according to a strongly codified display practice for fragments ex ossibus and ex indumentis intended for private devotion.
The front retains its antique hand-made glass, showing slight waviness and minor imperfections consistent with period manufacture. The overall patina and the natural internal oxidation enhance the authentic charm of the piece.
