Silver-plated Cuff Bracelet With Secret Compartment, 19th Century
Silver niello cuff bracelet with secret compartment, 19th century
Description
Nielloed silver cuff bracelet, probably of Oriental or Ottoman origin, dating from the second half of the 19th century. This piece is distinguished by its refined decoration of engraved foliate scrolls and floral motifs enhanced with black niello, a decorative technique particularly appreciated in Near Eastern and Balkan goldsmiths.
The center is adorned with a turquoise-blue cabochon mounted in a closed setting, bringing a luminous contrast to the whole. The articulated panels naturally follow the shape of the wrist and testify to meticulous goldsmithing.
A special feature is the ingenious secret compartment concealed beneath the central plate. This opens with a small push-button to reveal a sliding silver drawer. This type of arrangement, relatively rare, could be used to keep a precious souvenir, a relic, a message, a lock of hair or a solid perfume.
