950 sterling silver oil cruet set – Paris, 1819–1838

Elegant solid silver table oil cruet, accompanied by two blown-glass cruets with attached handles.

Description

The stand rests on a rectangular tray with a molded rim supported by four ball-shaped feet.
The two cylindrical compartments are richly decorated with applied palmettes, framed by twisted motifs.
In the center, a ring handle allows the set to be carried; it surmounts a symmetrical design of volutes, rosettes, and palmettes, as well as a small central receptacle.

A fine example of French silverwork from the Restoration period, still strongly influenced by Empire and Neoclassical decorative styles.

The silver bears, notably, the Vieillard (Michel-Ange) hallmark, the 1st Paris fineness mark, as well as the large guarantee hallmark featuring the head of Ceres, which dates its manufacture to Paris between 1819 and 1838 and guarantees a silver fineness of 950/1000.

The two glass cruets feature an elegant baluster shape with a long spout. A decorative and well-proportioned set that retains a beautiful presence.
