Circa 1840 .large Lined Metal Tray With Lp On Reverse Surmounted By A Closed Crown
Here's a large Louis Philippe period lined metal tray, bearing French hallmarks on the back, and in English fashion it seems, the initials LP in Gothic characters surmounted by a closed crown.
It is tempting to think that this is a piece of silverware that belonged to Louis Philippe in exile, the numeral having possibly been engraved in England in the fashion of the country, and in the manner of a simple private individual.
The tray bears the marks of use for a piece of such format ( 47 cm x 58 cm ) , small scratches and a few small dents, but the silvering is in excellent condition, original and without weakness, which attests that it is indeed doubled metal and not yet electrolytic silvering.
