Second Half Of The 19th Century. Horses In The Stable
While women achieved a significant place in painting at the end of the French monarchy under Louis XVI, attaining success and the highest distinctions (even membership in the Academy), the situation was quite different in the more austere 19th century. It wasn't until Rosa Bonheur that a woman once again held her place so masterfully in the Salon and received official honors. This small painting depicting two horses before their manger is very similar to the compositions of Théodore Fort, well-known at the end of the 19th century, but it too bears a female signature. While the first name Maria is perfectly legible, the last name, beginning with P (unless it's a complex capital letter), remains undecipherable for now. Nevertheless, the artist's skill is undeniable; the horses are painted with talent and sensitivity. The support is an excellent mahogany panel, and the original frame is in perfect condition. It has been recently cleaned to restore its soft light. Panel dimensions: 14.5 cm x 33 cm
