"House Interior, Oil On Wood By Paul Seignac"
Paul Seignac became a student of Edouard Picot in Paris. He specialized in genre painting, particularly drawn to depictions of rural scenes and paintings of children. He began exhibiting at the Salon in 1849, continuing until 1897. After living in Sarcelles, he arrived in Ecouen, where he joined the painters' colony. He moved into a large house and had the motto: Labor inscribed on the facade. At the age of 66 he became paralyzed and sold his home in Ecouen to the painter William Bouguereau, his son's teacher. Paul Seignac is still one of the most appreciated artists of the Ecouen School. Our work is very interesting because it reveals a certain way of working of the painter: The interior of an empty house will serve as a setting for genre scenes including "The Engraving Merchant" sold on 06/10/21 at Christie's. Unsigned but annotated later on the back: Ecouen School, Paul Seignac, 1835-1905, these dates seeming erroneous. The panel, of English manufacture, Reeves§son's.
