"French School, Early 18th Century, La Charité "
Oil on canvas, late 17th, early 18th century, given to the French school by an old cartel frame. The scene, representing people rescuing a family hidden in a cave, by lowering them with a rope of the victuals must certainly be inspired by the Bible. We even see in the left corner an old man curled up in the shadow. It is an edifying scene, likely to inspire piety and one of the major virtues charity. We will appreciate the intention of the painter who illuminates the saviors, the shimmering costumes of the rescued, certainly of high rank, and the ewer which alone stands out against the sky, symbolizing the virtue which satisfies. The painting is presented in a period frame, but cut. It was recently cleaned, which allowed to find details obscured by the old varnish. On the back of the frame we will note the presence of an old collection label. Dimensions without frame: 32 cm x 40 cm
