Gabon. Punu Mask With A Hinged Jaw
Although I am by no means an expert on primitive arts, I was intrigued by the unique feature of this Punu mask: the lower jaw is detached from the mask and secured with straps.
This allows the mask to make clicking sounds as it moves during ritual dances—sounds undoubtedly intended to imitate the voices of the elders in Okuyi ceremonies.
The effect is striking—and, for some, unsettling.
Acquired from a junk dealer who clears out houses, this mask must have been brought back in the 1950s.
It has an elegant and serene presence.
The pedestal will give it even more presence
