Large Reliquary With Multiple Relics, Including A Fragment Of The True Cross – Spain, Circa 1600

Authentic multi-relic reliquary with a fragment of the True Cross – Spain, circa 1600.

Large antique gilt bronze reliquary for private devotion, composed of the coherent superimposition of two separate reliquaries, attributable to southern Spain (probably Andalusia, Jaén region), circa 1600, with an earlier rearrangement of the relics after 1636.

Description:

The lower, tower-like section is inspired by Roman aediculae Christianized during the Renaissance. It rests on a wide, openwork base and is surmounted by a three-column canopy sheltering a sculpture in the round of the Christ Child holding the globus cruciger. Each side is pierced by a glazed oval window containing relics, including a fragment of the lignum crucis, as well as other relics of martyred saints.

The upper part consists of a large, richly decorated oval medallion, one side displaying an ancient painting of the Virgin surrounded by eight relics ex ossibus, identified by ancient handwritten labels, including: Saint Matthias the Apostle, Saint Vincent the Martyr, Saint Apollinaris, Saint Potentiana, Saint Mamilian, Saint Priscilla, Saint Agnes, and Saint Prima.

The opposite side features a central painted medallion depicting Christ, surrounded by eight relics ex ossibus identified by ancient handwritten labels: Saint John the Baptist, Saint Fabian (pope and martyr), Saint Stephen, Saint Lawrence, Saint Vincent the Martyr, Saint Thomas the Apostle, Saint Adrian the Martyr, and Saint Jerome.
The whole exhibits a typological, martyrological, and paleographic coherence characteristic of Spanish reliquaries from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Century.

Height 44 cm.
