Lamentation Of Christ In Carved Wood From The 15th Century
Important carved and partially gilded wood Lamentation of Christ - 15th century work
A remarkable carved wood group depicting a Lamentation of Christ, gathering around the body of Christ the Virgin, Saint John, Mary Magdalene as well as two standing holy women.
This particularly harmonious gilded walnut sculpture , offers a sensitive and balanced reading of the scene, where each figure participates in an atmosphere of contemplation and meditation. Christ, reclining in the center, forms the focal point of the work, around which is organized a group of figures with restrained, deeply expressive attitudes.
The treatment of the faces, imbued with gentleness and gravity, as well as the quality of the drapery with supple, rhythmic folds, testify to true sculptural craftsmanship, characteristic of late medieval productions.
The work retains traces of early polychromy as well as a later redrawing, the nuances of which still reveal beautiful effects in the light, emphasizing the sculpture's volumes and presence.
The ensemble has a fine overall patina, reinforcing its authenticity and decorative interest.
