Head Of A Nun – France, 15th Century

Exceptional Head of a Nun – France, 15th century

Exceptional carved stone head of a nun, France, 15th century, remarkable for the quality of its craftsmanship, the delicacy of its features, and the profound spirituality that emanates from its expression.

The face, of great gentleness, is enveloped in a monastic veil with carefully carved folds, framing the features with remarkable simplicity. The closed or slightly half-closed eyes accentuate the expression of meditation and contemplation characteristic of the great figures of late medieval French religious sculpture.

Through its treatment of the face, its introspective expression, and the monumental simplicity of its forms, this work belongs to the great tradition of 15th-century French statuary. In particular, it evokes certain iconic works of this period, including the Head of the Bernardine of Tulle, as well as the figures of the Virgin of Piety, from which it borrows this same silent and spiritual intensity.

The sculpture features a beautiful antique patina, accompanied by traces of polychromy, lending the stone remarkable texture and depth. These traces of color, weathered by the centuries, fully contribute to the work’s authenticity and exceptional character.

The head rests on an elegant, fluted octagonal pedestal, which allows for a refined display while particularly highlighting the medieval sculpture.

Thanks to the quality of its face, its deeply meditative expression, and the preservation of its antique patina and traces of polychromy, this head stands as a remarkable example of 15th-century French religious sculpture.
