Offering Dish Depicting St. George Slaying The Dragon, Nuremberg, 16th Century

A rare offering dish made of repoussé brass, depicting Saint George slaying the dragon. A beautiful example of 16th-century Nuremberg brasswork.

The platter features Saint George on horseback in its central medallion, brandishing his sword to slay the dragon, while the princess is shown praying in the background. The scene is surrounded by a Gothic inscription in relief and gadroons, characteristic of Nuremberg craftsmanship, as well as a wide rim adorned with a finely detailed, repeating stamped pattern.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Nuremberg copperware workshops were among the most renowned in Europe for the production of platters and offering basins intended for both liturgical and domestic use. The iconography of Saint George, a symbol of the victory of Good over Evil, is one of the most sought-after themes in this body of work.

In fine condition with a uniform antique patina. Some signs of wear consistent with its age.
