Offering Plate: The Sacrifice Of Isaac, Nuremberg, 16th Century

Rare repoussé brass offering dish depicting the Sacrifice of Isaac. Beautiful 16th-century Nuremberg copperwork.

The central medallion depicts the biblical episode of the Sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis 22). Abraham, his arm raised holding the sword, is about to sacrifice his son when the angel of God intervenes to stop him. On the right, Isaac is kneeling on the altar, while in the foreground stands the ram intended to be offered as a sacrifice in his place. The composition is complemented by a stylized landscape and surrounded by a Gothic inscription in relief, characteristic of Nuremberg craftsmanship.

The wide wing, adorned with a hammered gadrooned decoration and a repetitive stamped frieze, attests to the craftsmanship of the Nuremberg copperware workshops, whose offering basins rank among the most iconic works of the German Renaissance. These pieces were intended for both liturgical and domestic use and were prized for the richness of their religious decoration.

In good condition, with a uniform antique patina and some signs of wear consistent with its age.
