Description

A gilded silver ciborium featuring a balanced design, organized around a circular base, a knotted stem, and a rounded bowl topped with a domed lid. The ensemble is crowned by a cross with flared ends, set within a ring and adorned with a small central rosette.

The decoration extends coherently across the base, the bowl, and the lid. Ogive-shaped compartments contain stylized bouquets composed of flowers with protruding centers, slender stems, and small clusters of grains. Engraved scrollwork and foliage extend these motifs, while triangular panels punctuate the spaces in between. Delicate beaded borders outline the rim of the foot and the lid.

The stem is interrupted by a flattened knot, decorated with geometric and botanical motifs that echo those on the body. A band adorned with small rosettes marks the transition to the flared foot. The contrast between the smooth surfaces, the finely textured backgrounds, and the raised ornamentation lends the decoration a precise appearance. The monogram “D.J.T.” is engraved beneath the base. Technique and Materials

Crafted from 950/1000 silver, gilded, and bearing the Minerva hallmark. The work combines repoussé, chased, and engraved decorations, with particular attention paid to the contours of the flowers and the details of the stems. The interior of the cup features a smooth, gilded surface. The uniformity of the ornamentation and the finesse of the finishes attest to its high-quality craftsmanship.

Date

Late 19th century. The ornamental vocabulary—notably the ogival compartments, the geometric interpretation of the floral motifs, and the silhouette featuring a central knot—reflects the Neo-Gothic style characteristic of religious silverwork from this period.

Condition

In very good condition, with no mechanical damage. The gilding is very well preserved, including on the interior of the bowl. A natural patina adds nuance to the exterior surfaces and highlights the recesses of the decoration, while preserving the clarity of the details.

Use and Purpose

Liturgical vessel intended for the storage of consecrated hosts and their distribution during Communion. This ciborium is also suitable for a collection of antique silverware or sacred art, displayed in a showcase to allow for close observation of its decoration.
