Gilt Bronze And Imari Porcelain Guéridon, 19th Century
Typology and Intended Use
Elegant display guéridon resting on a richly ornamented gilt-bronze base and surmounted by a large circular Imari-type porcelain platter. This type of decorative furniture, highly appreciated in European interiors during the second half of the 19th century, was intended to serve as an occasional or display table, particularly in reception rooms and salons.
The combination of a gilt-bronze support with an Oriental porcelain top corresponds to a decorative tradition widely adopted in French and European production during the last quarter of the 19th century, a period marked by a pronounced taste for Orientalism and the integration of Asian objects into formal decorative furnishings.
Structure and Composition
The piece stands on a tripod gilt-bronze base composed of three richly sculpted legs resting on small concealed casters, allowing easy movement within an interior space.
The legs develop into rocaille scrolls and acanthus leaves, converging toward an openwork central core. The central column, twisted and animated with vegetal motifs in relief, belongs to a decorative vocabulary inspired by Rococo and the Louis XV style, interpreted through the eclectic spirit characteristic of the late 19th century.
The entire base displays fine chasing and a bright gilding, emphasizing the richness of the volumes and the depth of the relief decoration.
The Imari Porcelain Top
The circular top consists of a large Imari-type porcelain bowl, characteristic of Japanese wares produced for export to Europe from the 17th century onward and widely collected during the 19th century.
The polychrome decoration features a rich arrangement of stylized floral motifs, scrolling foliage, and compartmentalized reserves, executed in the typical Imari palette:
• cobalt blue underglaze
• iron red
• gold highlights
The decorative registers alternate deep blue grounds adorned with flowers and medallions with lighter panels decorated with flowering branches and vegetal compositions. The center presents a floral medallion surrounded by stylized scrollwork, in a balanced composition characteristic of Japanese ceramics exported to the West.
The porcelain is mounted in a wide gilt-bronze frame forming a richly pierced border decorated with clusters, foliage, and fruit, creating a harmonious transition between the ceramic element and the metal structure.
Materials and Techniques
The object combines several artisanal techniques characteristic of 19th-century decorative production:
• bronze casting and chasing for the base and mount
• mercury gilding or fire gilding, giving the metal its warm and deep tone
• Japanese porcelain decorated in polychrome with gold highlights
• mechanical mounting of the porcelain bowl within the metal frame
This association of materials—gilt bronze and Oriental porcelain—was particularly sought after in the major European decorative workshops of the period.
Period
Decorative work from the late 19th century, circa 1880–1890, representative of the eclectic and Orientalist taste that characterizes furniture and works of art from this period.
Condition
The piece is in very good overall condition. The porcelain shows no cracks or restorations, and the gilt bronze retains a beautiful presence with a homogeneous patina consistent with age.
