Grand Duchy Of Berg Gendarmerie Sabre, Early 19th Century, Napoleonic Period
Provenance
Gendarmerie saber from the Grand Duchy of Berg, identified by the inscriptions on both sides of the blade. This Rhenish state, whose capital was Düsseldorf, existed from 1806 to 1813 under the influence of Napoleonic France. These inscriptions account for the particular historical significance of this weapon, which is associated with a unit serving a territory whose existence was brief. No manufacturer can be identified with certainty based on the visible markings.
Description
The saber features a long, curved blade with a wide hollow edge, bearing the inscription “GENDARMERIE” on one side and “GRAND DUCHÉ DE BERG” on the other. These inscriptions are accompanied by engraved plant motifs and ornaments, arranged primarily near the guard.
The brass mount consists of a single-branch guard, a curved quillon with a rounded tip, and a cap extended by a long back piece. The tang, covered in dark leather, is surrounded by a twisted metal filigree that highlights its regular grooves.
The sword is presented with its metal scabbard, which follows the curve of the blade. Two brass straps, edged with moldings, hold the suspension rings. A metal tip protects its lower end. The presence of the scabbard and its two rings preserves the set’s visual coherence and completeness.
Technique and Materials
Steel blade with engraved inscriptions and decoration. Brass scabbard mount and straps; the tang is leather-wrapped and trimmed with metal filigree. The contrast between the steel and the yellow trim highlights the simple construction of this military-purpose weapon.
Date
Early 19th century, Napoleonic era, circa 1806–1813. This dating corresponds to the period of existence of the Grand Duchy of Berg mentioned on the blade and is consistent with the saber’s overall design. No manufacturing date is legible in the photographs.
Condition
In good overall condition, with patina, traces of oxidation, and pitting visible on the metal parts, particularly on the scabbard. The blade shows signs of cleaning and wear on the decoration, though the inscriptions remain legible. The leather and filigree are preserved, with signs of wear.
Use and Purpose
Service weapon intended for the gendarmerie, now a collector’s item. Its uniqueness lies in its explicit territorial identification and the preservation of its scabbard. It would be well-suited for a collection of antique weapons or memorabilia from the Napoleonic era.
