Hartmann Travel Trunk, Early 20th Century

Artist: Hartman

Provenance
Travel wardrobe trunk bearing the Hartmann maker’s label, with the visible wording “Cushion Top Wardrobe Trunks”. This type of luggage belongs to the tradition of large travel trunks designed for extended journeys, particularly by train, ocean liner or motor car. It is not a simple suitcase, but a portable wardrobe created to transport clothing, linen and accessories in a structured and practical arrangement.

Description
This Hartmann travel trunk opens vertically and reveals a well-organised interior. One side is fitted as a wardrobe section, with metal rails and wooden hangers intended for jackets, dresses, shirts or garments that needed to remain suspended during travel. The opposite section is arranged with several covered drawers, each fitted with decorative metal handles. A removable inner suitcase completes the ensemble and illustrates the practical design of this form of luxury travel luggage. The exterior retains its dark green finish, combined with black reinforcements, patinated brass and metal fittings, visible rivets, hinges, locks and protective corner mounts. The original transport labels, still preserved on the surface, add to the authenticity and historical character of the piece.

Technique and materials
The trunk is made with a rigid body covered in coated canvas or similar material, reinforced with metal mounts, brass elements, riveted construction and a covered upper handle. The interior is lined with blue-green fabric and fitted with drawers, wardrobe rail, wooden hangers and preserved original accessories.

Dating
First half of the 20th century. This dating is consistent with the wardrobe-trunk construction, riveted hardware, industrial fittings and surviving travel labels.

Condition
Very good condition for a travel object of this type, retaining its original character and practical arrangement. Wear, rubbing, oxidation, handling marks and original transport labels are visible, all consistent with age and use. The trunk preserves a strong decorative presence and an attractive authentic patina.

Function and display
Today, wardrobe trunks of this kind are highly appreciated in interior decoration. They can be used as a dressing-room feature, decorative storage piece, occasional cabinet, display object, or statement piece in a living room, bedroom, boutique or hotel interior. Its patinated surface, metal fittings and preserved interior arrangement give it both decorative strength and practical interest.
