Baroque reliquary of Saint Camillus de Lellis – 18th century

18th-century Baroque reliquary with a richly crafted silver-plated metal setting in repoussé on wood, decorated with volutes, scrollwork, and foliage motifs.

In the center, protected by a beveled crystal glass pane, the relic rests on a red fabric background surrounded by gilded scrollwork. The handwritten cartouche bears the inscription “B. Camilli de Lellis,” referring to Camillus de Lellis (1550–1614).

Founder of the Order of the Camillians, dedicated to the care of the sick, Camillus de Lellis was beatified in 1742 and canonized in 1746; he is notably considered the patron saint of the sick, hospitals, and healthcare workers.

The abbreviation “B.” (Beatus, Blessed) is particularly interesting: if the cartouche dates from the time the reliquary was made, it could indicate that it was crafted between his beatification in 1742 and his canonization in 1746.

The piece rests on a carved and gilded wooden base that retains its original patina.

Condition:

Good antique condition; wear, oxidation, and losses in the gilding are consistent with its age and visible in the photographs.

In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale pertains solely to the reliquary as an object of sacred art. The relics it contains are not part of the transaction but are included free of charge for their historical and cultural value.
